Dhankar is a dramatically perched village that was once the ancient capital of the Spiti Kingdom. The historic Dhankar Monastery (Gompa) is built on a high mud cliff, seemingly clinging to the edge of a precipitous mountain face. Overlooking the spectacular confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, the monastery houses ancient Buddhist scriptures, murals, and a statue of Vairochana. The dramatic location, coupled with wind-eroded rock pillars, makes Dhankar one of the most visually stunning and spiritually historic sites in the valley.

Be extremely careful when walking inside the ancient monastery structure; parts of it are fragile
Remove shoes before entering the prayer rooms
Do not run, shout, or stomp on the wooden floors of the ancient structure
