Mattupetty Dam is a massive concrete gravity dam nestled in the hills of Munnar, built to conserve water for hydroelectric power. The dam creates a beautiful, serene lake surrounded by dense pine forests, tea estates, and misty hills. The lake is popular for speedboating and motorboat cruises, where travelers can often spot herds of wild elephants coming down to drink water on the forested shores. Nearby, the Indo-Swiss Dairy Project farm offers a unique look at high-yield cattle breeding.

Responsible Travel & Etiquette

  • Wear a life jacket at all times if opting for speedboating or cruise boat rides

  • Do not throw plastic bottles or food wrappers into the lake water

  • Do not attempt to cross the safety barriers on the dam bridge

  • Avoid making loud noises near the forest shores where elephants might be present
