The Tungnath Temple trek is a spectacular 3.5-kilometer hike that leads to the highest Shiva temple in the world. Starting from Chopta, the paved stone path winds uphill through rhododendron forests and opens up to alpine meadows. Situated at 12,070 feet, the ancient stone temple is over 1000 years old and is part of the Panch Kedar. For the ultimate reward, hikers can climb 1.5 km further to Chandrashila Peak (13,120 ft), which offers a jaw-dropping, 360-degree view of the entire Garhwal Himalayas.

Wear warm layers as the wind speeds at the temple and Chandrashila summit are extremely high
Wear shoes with good grip; the trail can be covered in snow or ice in early summer and winter
Do not consume alcohol or carry non-vegetarian food near the sacred temple premises
Walk at a steady pace and drink water to avoid altitude sickness

No, the temple remains closed during winter due to heavy snow, and the deity is moved down to Makkumath.
