Overview & Story
Shimla became the summer capital of British India in the 1800s and the colonial character of the town is still visible in its architecture, its layout, and in The Ridge.
**The Ridge**
The Ridge is an open promenade at the top of Shimla town, running roughly east-west. At the eastern end is Christ Church — a neo-Gothic Anglican church built in the 1850s, one of the oldest churches in north India. At the western end, the Scandal Point marks the junction with Cart Road. The Ridge is at about 2,200 metres and has views over the wooded ridgelines below Shimla and, in clear weather, toward the higher Himalayan peaks to the north.
Essential Travel & Packing Tips
Expert recommendations for a safe and comfortable trip
Shimla's Mall Road is pedestrianised from Scandal Point to the Library, accessible only on foot or by the electric cart.
Jakhoo Hill has resident langur monkeys — they are bold and will take food if it is visible. Keep snacks inside bags.
The views from Jakhoo Temple toward the snow peaks are better in the morning before haze develops.
